Husker Football Is Back And In A BIG WAY!
Bo Pelini and company are assembling an impressive list of Nebraska high school athletes that have–according to reports–accepted the Husker offers to walk-on at Nebraska. All of the athletes have decided to forgoe scholarships to outstanding D-IAA, D-II and NAIA schools. Moreover, a couple of athletes still on the fence may decide to turndown potential last minute D-IA offers to suit up for the Huskers.
Outstanding Athletes to Walk-on
Lincoln North Star’s 6-3, 180lb, WR Dillon Schrodt, a 6-9 high jumper who placed second to Central’s Deverell Biggs in last season’s state track meet, holds D-IA offers in track. Nevertheless, according to reports, he has decided to walk-on at Nebraksa. Another outstanding track athlete intending to join the Huskers is Centennial’s 6-1, 180lb, WR Tyler Wullenwabler, a 4.4 forty kid who can also leap over 24 feet in he high jump–keep an eye out on this one!
Rounding out the list of top all-around-athletes is Omaha Burke’s 6-2, 190lb,LB Austin Williams: he recently won the Metro 171lb wrestling title by beating (4-2) last year’s Class A state champ and 2009 All-Nebraska first team football player Cody Hobbs of Creighton Prep.
We have already reported that Lincoln North Star 5-10, 175lb, ATH, Yusef Wade has accepted the Husker walk-on. And Elkhorn’s 6-3, 225lb, LB Trevor Roach has apparently decided to become a Husker.
Still on the Fence
Millard North’s Lincoln Hansen, a very promising 6-6, 275lb, OT, who was hurt most of his junior year–hampering his recruiting, reportedly has a visit to D-I A MAC Eastern Michigan this weekend but is still considering the Husker Walk-on offer. No final word yet on Creighton Prep’s 5-11, 200lb, S/RB Nick Mizaur, another outstanding wrestler and football player. Nor any final decision for his teammate, 6-2, 280lb, DT Jeff Uher.
Huskers On the Move
The addition of these outstanding athletes, who are wiling to forgo student/athletic scholarship offers to play for the Huskers, speaks volumes about the direction of the Big Red football program–UP! WAY UP! Say what you will about kids making the wrong decision by turning down full-ride scholarships to walk-on at Nebraska; but the rewards for that risk can be huge indeed if they prevail.
No doubt the Huskers under Bo Pelini are poised to make national title runs from this point out. And to be a member of a team that plays for a national title–even better yet wins one–is priceless!
